DRESS CODE

WHAT TO WEAR

Proper dancewear is required for all classes:

  • No jewelry
  • Street Shoes and clothes are NOT allowed in any class
  • Dance shoes should NEVER be worn outside the studio (INCLUDING HIP HOP SNEAKERS). This damages the dance shoes and our dance floors. Dancers should change into their dance shoes upon arriving at the studio for their class. 
  • No basketball shorts (long), baggy sweats or tee shirts allowed ONLY in Hip Hop class
  • Wearing only socks is ONLY allowed in CONTEMPORARY class

For each class requiring a uniform, leotards must be purchased through the studio. For all other purchases, we carry some inventory in the studio, and the listed shops carry the complete approved dress code for MK Dance Academy (with the exception of leotards). If you are not sure of your sizes or prefer shopping in person, we carry most leotards in the studio and have samples for sizing.

DANCE WITH ME
  • Girls Pink leather ballet, Guys Black leather,  with elastic instep. Shoes can be fitted at the studio. 
  • Girls:  Any color leotard and tights
  • Guys: Tee shirt & stretchy shorts
3-4 BALLET/TAP

Ballet and Tap class will change shoes one time during the lesson.

  • Girls: Pink leather ballet slipper.
  • Girls: Black tap shoe with either velcro buckle or faux tie style with elastic is OK.  
  • Girls: Uniforms are required. Class leotards must be purchased from the studio.
  • Guys: Black leather ballet slipper.
  • Guys:  any brand black Oxford style. 
  • Guys: Required uniform tee shirt & black tights/leggings/fitted joggers/shorts.
    4-6 BALLET/TAP

    Ballet and Tap class will change shoes one time during the lesson.

    • Girls: Pink leather ballet slipper.
    • Girls: Black tap shoe with either a Velcro buckle or a faux tie style with elastic is OK.  
    • Girls: Uniforms are required. Class leotards must be purchased from the studio.
    • Guys: Black leather ballet slipper.
    • Guys:  Any brand black Oxford style. 
    • Guys: Required uniform T-shirt & black tights/leggings/fitted joggers/shorts.
    BALLET
    • Uniforms are required. Class leotards must be purchased from the studio. Shoes and tights are available in studio, or can be found at Dorothy’s Dance Shop in San Antonio.
    • Hair must be pulled back securely in a neat bun with a hair net. If hair is too short to achieve a bun, we recommend a French or Dutch braid.
    Jazz/Lyrical/Contemporary

    Jazz

    • All Genders: Jazz shoes or barefoot. For jazz shoes, we recommend any stretch canvas jazz shoe in a color that best matches the dancer’s skin tone. Leggings, tights, or shorts with at least a 2″ inseam must be worn. 
    • Any color leotard or fitted tank/athletic top is permitted. 
    • No baggy clothing allowed.
    • Hair pulled back. 

      Contemporary/Lyrical

      • Class is taken in socks or barefoot. Socks should be a crew sock. This is the ONLY class that is to be taken in socks. 
      • All genders: fitted athletic clothing.  Long-sleeved shirt is optional due to floorwork. 
      • Hair neatly pulled back. 
      HIP HOP & TAP

      Hip-Hop

      • All Genders: White tennis shoes with a WHITE sole. All HH students will need these shoes for performance. Shoes are for IN-STUDIO ONLY. 
      • Tank tops /t-shirts and baggy cargo/jogger style pants. 
      • All female dancers must wear sportsbra/fitted undershirt underneath top.
      • Hair pulled back, bun not required.

      Tap

      • Leggings or shorts with 2″ inseam or longer. 
      • Leotard or form-fitting athletic top.
      • Girls: Oxford lace-up style Tap shoe in black. 
      • Guys: Oxford tie-up style in black ( Bloch Respect or Capezio Fluid preferred)
      ACRO

      Acro

      • Leggings or shorts with 2″ inseam or longer. If wearing tights, they must be footless. Class is taken barefoot.
      • Leotard or form-fitting athletic top. ABSOLUTELY NO LOOSE T-SHIRTS. Loose clothing has the potential to injure both students and teachers.
      • Hair pulled back in a neat braid or bun. Ponytails and loose hair increase risk of injuries.
